ネイティヴですら混乱するこの二つの動詞。エリッククラプトンの間違いを思い出してもう一度整理しよう。

(主語) が横たわる Lie
I am having a headache.
頭痛がしているんだよね。
Oh, dear. You should lie down and rest.
あら、あなた、横になって休んだ方が良いわよ。
It was such a nice day today, I lay on the grass all day.
A typical cat day. While I was working all day.
典型的な猫の1日だな。一方、僕は一日中働いていた。
Working on what?
何して働いていたの？
Barking at the neighbor dogs, just to be sure.
隣の犬たちに向かって吠えていたの、念の為。
Lie の過去形は Lay。他動詞の Lay の現在形と同じなのを思い出そう。
Do you think the hard part is over?
No, there is a harder part lies ahead.
Who left toys lying all over the yard?
庭にオモチャを散らかしたままにしてるのは誰だ？
Not me. I think that’s a typical dog thing to do.
僕じゃ無いよ。それって犬がやりそうな典型的な事だと思う。
Leave toys lying = オモチャが横たわった状態で放っておく ＝ オモチャを散らかしたままにする
The key to success lies in hard work.
成功への鍵は努力する事にあるのだ。
Good. Work hard, and give me the key when you find it.
それは良いわね。一生懸命努力して鍵が見つかったら私に頂戴。
lie = 横たわっている = そこにある = 位置している
例：The city lies between the two rivers.
嘘をつく lie
The president lied 1600 times in three years since he took the office.
大統領は就任してから3年間の間に1600回嘘をついたらしい。
It is amazing that anybody takes him seriously still.
今だに彼を真面目に受け止める人がいるってのが驚異的だよね。
横たわる lie と嘘をつく lie は過去形、過去分詞形が違うことを思い出そう。
