パート11、ついに最終回です。

The really important kind of freedom involves attention and awareness and discipline, and being able truly to care about other people and to sacrifice for them over and over in myriad petty, unsexy ways every day.

本当に重要な自由を得るには気を配って周りを見ることと意識的な訓練が必要だ、そして以下の事が出来る能力が必要（→）他の人の見になって考える事、そして他の人のために自分を犠牲にする事、何回も無数の取るに足りなく、見栄えもしない場面で、毎日毎日。

That is real freedom. That is being educated, and understanding how to think.

それが本当の意味での自由なのだ。それが教養があり、考える方法を理解しているということなのだ。

The alternative is unconsciousness, the default setting, the rat race, the constant gnawing sense of having had, and lost, some infinite thing.

それが出来ないと、無意識のうちに初期設定でしか行動できない。それは、ひたすらの他人との競争で、つねに誰かに出し抜かれて、負けている、などと無限の心配に苛まれることになる。

I know that this stuff probably doesn’t sound fun and breezy or grandly inspirational the way a commencement speech is supposed to sound.

分かっています、言っている事が楽しくもないし、簡単でも、また偉大な志を抱かせる様ではないと、一般の卒業スピーチで期待される様に。

What it is, as far as I can see, is the capital-T Truth, with a whole lot of rhetorical niceties stripped away.

これが何かと言うと、私が理解する限り、大文字の「T」で書く「真実（Truth)」なのです。あたりの良い、修辞的なものをすっかり取り除いた。

You are, of course, free to think of it whatever you wish.

もちろんこれについてどう考えようが個人の自由です。

But please don’t just dismiss it as just some finger-wagging Dr Laura sermon.

しかし、どうか簡単にこの事を無視しないで下さい、まるで、ドクター・ローラが指を振って説教している事と同じ様に。

POINT

Dr. Laura はラジオの人生相談の有名な番組。

None of this stuff is really about morality or religion or dogma or big fancy questions of life after death.

言っている事は一切関係ありません、道徳や、宗教、教義、あるいは死後の世界に関する大仰な問いかけとは。

The capital-T Truth is about life BEFORE death.

大文字のTの真実は「死前」の問題なのです。

It is about the real value of a real education, which has almost nothing to do with knowledge, and everything to do with simple awareness;

この真実は本当の意味での教育の、本当の意味での価値なのです。それは知識とは関係なく、単純に注意を払う事に大いに関係があるのです。

awareness of what is so real and essential, so hidden in plain sight all around us, all the time, that we have to keep reminding ourselves over and over:

本物の、そして本質的な事に注意を払う事、それは私たちの周りにいつもどこでもあるために逆に見えないものなので、常に自分自身に繰り返し言い聞かせなければならないのだ。

“This is water.”

「これが水なんだ。これが水なんだ。」　と。

It is unimaginably hard to do this, to stay conscious and alive in the adult world day in and day out. Which means yet another grand cliché turns out to be true: your education really IS the job of a lifetime. And it commences: now.

これは想像出来ない程に実行するのは難しい。常に意識を払い、本当の意味で生きている事は、大人の生活の日々の中で。それは意味する、またしても有名な常套句が正しかった事を。教育とはまさに本当に一生かけて行われるものであるのだ。そしてその教育は、今、始まるのだ。
