アメリカの自由：Don’t Tread On Me が意味すること

星条旗は誰もが知っているが、ガラガラヘビがとぐろを巻いている絵が付いた黄色い旗を見たことがあるだろうか？

Everybody knows “Old Glory” (Star-Spangled Banner) but have you seen a yellow flag with a rattlesnake coiling on grass?

「Don’t Tread On Me」と書いてある。

The text reads “Don’t Tread On Me”.

Treadは上を歩く、踏むなどの意味がある。つまり、「私を踏みつけるな」、「噛みつくぞ」という脅しだ。

To tread on, means to walk on. So it is a threat that says “Don’t walk on me, otherwise I will bite”. （Wikipedia entry here).

この旗が象徴するアメリカの自由について考察しよう。（ウィキペディアの説明参照）。

Let’s think about what the flag symbolize in a certain context.

ギャヅデン・フラッグ

このギャヅデンフラッグと呼ばれる旗は、独立戦争に時にアメリカ軍の旗として登場した。

Originally the flag, which is called “Gadsden Flag” was a US flag in the time of revolutionary war.

しかしその後はリバタリアン（完全自由主義）やティーパーティなどの、政治的グループによって使われた。

But since then, it was used by political parties like libertarians, and more recently by Tea Party.

通常、小さな政府や、最小限の規則と最低限の税金などの考えを象徴する。

It is typically associated with an idea of small government with the least amount of regulations and taxation.

自由のはきちがえ

近頃では、ギャヅデン・フラッグは反国民医療制度、反銃規制、新型ウィルスによるロックダウンに反対する運動に使われるのが目に付く。(言い換えれば、トランプの支持者によってよく使われる。）

And now the flag is used for anti-universal health care, anti-gun controls and recently anti-lock down due to Covid-19. （In other words, it is often used by Trump supporters.)

僕には、これらの自由を歌った反対運動は、欲や恐怖、そして独善的な考えによって動いているように見える。

It seems to me that these demonstrations of so-called freedom are motivated by greed, fear, and selfishness.

まとめ

僕は自由や独立の考え方を愛する。また、自由に生きることを良しとするアメリカという国に対して敬意を抱く。

I love freedom and independence. I respect America as a country which embrace the idea of “live free”.

しかし、以前の投稿で書いたように、大きな視点で人々全体のために政府の規制が必要となる場合はあるのだ。(新型ウイルスと自由について）

But as I previously wrote that there are occasions when we need a government to regulate for a bigger picture for people as a whole. （Freedom and responsibility in the time pandemic.)

全くのわがままのために自由の概念が使われるのを見ると失望するのだ。

It is disappointing to see some people use the idea of freedom for very selfish way.

追記　1月13日2021年

先週起こった、トランプサポーターによる米連邦議会議事堂への乱入事件の映像に、このギャヅデン・フラッグの黄色が目に付く。

民主主義、アメリカという国そのものを攻撃しながら、アメリカ国旗や、ギャヅデン・フラッグを振り回している様子を見ると、シンボルの担う意味は簡単にすげ替えられてしまうものだと分かる。

Freedom! と叫びながら民主主義を攻撃する姿は、「言葉の意味」という社会で共有する最低限の決まり事すら崩壊していく様子を明らかにし、空恐ろしい思いをさせられる。
