アメリカではかなりの知名度があるのに日本では知られていないバンド、「グレートフルデッド Grateful Dead」って知ってる？
ヒッピーバンドの代表であり、サイケデリックロック、ジャムロックなどのジャンルに大きく影響を残したベイエリア出身のグループだ。
ジャムバンドって何？
“Jam band” means a band that plays extensive improvised solos.
「ジャムバンド」とはそれぞれの楽器のソロ演奏を行うバンドの総称だ。
The concept of improvization is similar to Jazz, but the music is more rock.
即興で演奏する点ではジャズに似ているが、音楽的にはロック色が強い。
They are also called Jazz Rock or Psychedelic Rock.
ジャズロックとか、サイケデリックロックと呼ばれることもある。
It’s all about improvisations—at their live show, they don’t play the same solos from their records.
即興演奏が売りで、ライブではレコード通りのソロなどは演らない。
ギターリスト、ジェリーガルシア
The lead guitarist was Jerry Garcia. He had passed away on August 9th, 1995, at the age of 53.
リードギタリスはジェリーガルシア。彼は1995年の8月9日に53才で死去している。
I was thinking about him because of the date of his passing. Also, I turned 53 this year.
最近彼の事を考えている。先日、彼の命日であったし、僕自身、今年53才になったこともある。
Jerry always seemed old to me when I was younger. So it is strange that I am his age now.
自分が若い時はジェリーは歳を取っているように見えた。だから自分が彼の歳になった事が不思議なのだ。
間に合った最後のギグ
I didn’t know Grateful Dead until my wife introduced me to their music when we first met in Japan.
日本で妻に最初に会った時に彼女が紹介してくれるまで、僕はグレートフルデッドを知らなかった。
I loved their unique combinations of American root music and their performance style. Nothing but music.

We moved to Santa Cruz, California, in the end of 94. In March, ’95, we went to see Grateful Dead in Oakland.

My first experience of the famed “Dead show” was a culture shock for sure. I had seen nothing like it.

We caught another show in Sunnyvale, CA, and a show of Jerry Garcia Band in June in San Francisco.

It was 2 months before his death. I am glad that I saw him before too late!
彼の死の２ヶ月前の事だ。死ぬ前に実際に聴けて良かった！
次世代
The band, Grateful Dead still tours around without Jerry Garcia, sometimes featuring other artists like John Mayer.
ジェリーガルシアが亡くなってからもグレートフルデッドは、時に、ジョンメイヤーなど、ゲストアーティストを迎えながら活動を続ける。
Now there are also many Jam bands influenced by Grateful Dead, such as Phish.
そして今では、「フィッシュ (Phish)」のように、グレートフルデッドの影響を受けたバンドは多い。

Improvised = 即興で演奏した。
Improvisation = その場で即興でやること。アドリブ (ad-lib) はラテン語からきた言葉で英語でも使われるが、音楽の文脈では最近、僕が知る限りでは、ほぼ聞かない。
