秋分の日 [Fall Equinox] オレゴンの森にも秋のサイン

Passing the fall equinox, it really becomes like fall in the forest.

秋分の日が過ぎると、森は全く秋の様になる。

Overwhelming signs of fall are here, reminding us of the earth’s movement and the time.

圧倒的な秋の気配がそこら中にあり、地球が動き、時間が経っていくのを意識させる。

I want to note all the signs of changes around me.

そんな周りにある秋のサインを僕は１つも見逃したくない。

4年目のリンゴの木

An apple tree we had planted four years ago is producing many apples this year!

今年は4年前に植えたリンゴの木に実がたくさんなっている。

These apples are called “Monarch”. We wanted to plant an apple tree that you don’t see in the grocery stores.

これは「モナーク」という種類のリンゴ。店には売っていない種類のリンゴを植えたかったのだ。

Making fruits pie crust is my speciality. In recent years, I make Vegan crust using coconut oil.

パイの皮を作るのは僕の仕事だ。 最近は完全野菜主義のココナッツ・オイルを使ってパイの皮を作る。

モルモンのプラムの木

We got Italian plums too.

プラムも成った。

Supposedly this plum tree originates from a tree that belonged to a Mormon family who came to this place from Salt Lake City.

この木はソルトレイクシティからきたモルモン教の家族がこの辺に移住した時に持ってきた木の子孫らしい。

We got some fruit, but quick setting mold damaged the majority of them.

成ったのだけれど、今年は急に起こるカビに大半がやられてしまった。

移動する鳥

We usually start seeing band-tailed pigeons every year around this time. They congregate in cascara trees for the berries.

この時期になると、バンドテール鳩が目につき始める。カスカラの木に実を食べるために群れてくる。

And suddenly all the pigeons fly away together at the same time, making loud wing flapping noise. It is a typical sound of late summer/fall.

そして突然、皆、同時に大きな羽の音を立てて飛び去る。その音は夏の終わりから秋にかけての典型的な音なのだ。

Canadian geese started their migration down to South.

カナディアンギースも南への移動を始めた。

When I hear faraway but boisterous quacking noise I look for them in the sky.

はるか遠く、それでも賑やかな鳴き声を聞くと空を見上げて雁を探す。

Sure enough, I spot the V-shaped tiny dots gliding South bound. I somehow feel like I am being left behind.

V字型を作る点が南へ飛んでいく。なんだか後に置き去りにされるような気がする。

薪割りは楽しい？

It is also the time I have to start thinking about firewood.

この季節はまた、焚き木の事を考えければならない。

Usually I collect firewood around our house, but this year I decided to buy some from a local business.

例年は家の周りから薪を集めるが、今年は地元の業者から買う事にした。

I had picked up two cords of firewood with my truck already. I buy wood that are not split. It’s cheaper in this way. Also, I like splitting firewood. It is a hard work but very satisfying!

すでにトラックで２山の薪を買って運んできた。割っていないものを買う。幾分安いし、薪割りは好きだ。作業は大変だが満足感がある。

最初の大雨

It is raining hard right now. This is the first heavy rain in the fall. We will have a lot of rain from here all the way through the winter.

今日は土砂降り。秋の最初の大雨だ。これから冬を通してたくさんの雨が降る。

And one thing this rain will bring: the mushrooms! After a week or two after this rain, we should start seeing boletes coming up.

そしてこの雨がもたらすものはキノコだ！この雨から1、2週間前後にボリートが出始めるのだ。

まとめ

One thing I love about living in the forest is that you can’t avoid witnessing all the subtle changes in the nature everyday.

森に住んでいて良いのは自然の毎日の微妙な変化を気がつかざるを得ない点だ。

The fall can be melancholic a little, but passing time is bitter sweet, anyway. By observing its progress really well, I am perhaps trying to slow the time.

秋はなんとなくメランコリーな気にさせられるが、時間の流れそのものが素晴らしく同時に悲しいものだ。　よく観察する事で時間の流れを遅くしようてしているのかもしれない。
