新型ウイルスと自由について　Freedom and responsibility

Freedom is one of the most important things to me, and I think about it a lot.

自由は僕にとってもっとも重要な事の内の一つなので、よくそれについて考える。

Now that the new virus pandemic is taking over the world, our freedom is diminishing rapidly.

この新型ウイルスのパンデミックが世界を蔓延する中、自由がどんどん失われていく。

This may be the time that you can’t insist on your own freedom blindly.

このケースは自分の自由を盲目的に主張する事が出来ない場合だ。

自由を別の角度からみる必要のある時　When we have to rethink freedom

Here is one example of the case when you can’t exercise your free will.

以下は自由な意思を行使できない場合の例だ。

Imagine you own a property along a river. There are other properties along the same river, up and down the stream.

川沿いに土地を所有していると仮定しよう。上流、下流に他の人たちも土地を所有している。

If you allow the property owners to have a complete freedom, you can’t control some inconsiderate people not to pollute the river.

土地所有者が完全な自由を持っていたとしたら、他人の事を考えない人が川を汚染する事を止めることは出来ない。

It takes only one person to destroy the river and other people’s lives.

一人の人間が川を、川沿いに住む人の生活を破壊する事になる。

たった一人が重大にな結果を招く　It only takes one

This “stay in shelter” strategy to curb pandemic of the new virus requires everybody’s participation.

今回のウイルスの感染拡大を防ぐための自宅待機の政策は皆が行う必要がある。

We already know how devastating just one infected individual walking around in the open can be.

一人の感染者が普通に行動する事がどれだけの被害を起こすかは、すでに知られている。

But not everybody is informed and capable of making sound decisions. So we must have rules and ways to enforce them.

しかし全ての人が正確な情報を持って正しい判断をすることはない。従って、規制とその施行が必要になるのだ。

自由を妨げる人 People who hinder freedom

If everybody was considerate and thoughtful, we can have more freedom. Because we don’t have to have so many rules prohibiting selfish actions.

全ての人が他の人の事を考え、思慮深く行動するなら、我々はもっと自由を手にする事ができる。身勝手な行動を妨げる規制の必要が無くなるからだ。

There are many places where dogs are not allowed. But if all the dog owners are cleaning after their pets, we will be free to take our dogs more places.

犬を連れて入っては行けない場所がたくさんある。しかし、全ての犬の飼い主が犬のフンを始末すれば、犬を自由にどこにでも連れて行けることになる。

So if you truly value freedom, be considerate and thoughtful. Otherwise, you are destroying freedom by your selfish actions.

もし自由を本当に重要だと考えるならば、他人の事をよく考えて行動しよう。わがままな行動が自由を破壊するのだ。
