アメリカ山暮らし：隣人は愛すべきだが、選べないのが問題だ。

We have been living in the mountains. It is remote in the middle of forest, decidedly not in a suburb. But we have one next-door neighbor

僕らは山の中に住んでいる。郊外などと言うものでは無く、森の中の僻地だ。しかしお隣さんが一軒だけいる。

They are our parent’s age. They had raised three daughters in the house, but they live by themselves with dogs now. Very quiet and considerate. We have similar political views. We have been neighbors for almost 20 years.

彼らは僕の親の年代で、この家で娘を3人育て、今は2人だけで犬と暮らしている。静かでとても思いやりのある人たちだ。僕らと政治的な意見も一致している。もう20年もお隣さんとして付き合っている。

In other words, we are so very lucky; we love our neighbors.

つまり、僕らは隣人を愛している。とてもラッキーなのだ。

他に誰もいない時

As neighbors, we need to help each other, especially in rural places where there aren’t many people around.

他に誰もいない田舎では隣同士、助け合う必要がある。

When the population density is low, the inter-personal relations become intimate.

人口密度が少ないと、人々の関係も親密になってくる。

田舎が良い場合

We have learned a lot from our neighbors. Especially using chainsaws and getting firewood.

僕らは隣の人から色々学んだ。特にチェインソーの使い方や、薪の集め方などだ。

We help take care of each other’s house and pets while we are away from home. We share food. It would have been hard without them being our neighbors.

家を空けて外出する時は、家の留守番やペットの世話をお互いに助ける。食べ物も分け合う。彼らがお隣でなかったら、結構苦労していたように思う。

田舎が最悪の場合

A few years ago, we went to visit a house for sale in the country by a river.

数年前、田舎の川の辺りの売家を見に行ったことがある。

As soon as we got there, the next-door neighbors started shooting guns in their yard, apparently not wanting the house to be sold.

僕らが到着するやいなや、隣の人たちは裏庭で銃を発砲し始めた。明らかにその家が売れることを妨害したいらしい。

It could be anything that annoys you, as you can imagine. And you are stuck with the neighbors in the middle of nowhere.

お分かりのように、迷惑には色々ある。そして他には全く何も無い場所で、その隣人から逃げられないのだ。

運に任せるしか無い

Of course, there are frightening neighbor stories in the urban setting as well.

もちろん、都会なりの隣人に関する恐ろしい話はあるだろう。

The thing is that you can’t choose your neighbors. We are afraid when our current neighbors eventually move out.

問題は隣人を選べないことなのだ。今のお隣が、いずれ引っ越すことになる時が恐ろしい。
