After living in Vancouver for about a half year, I decided to go to Tronto. I was looking forward to experiencing how big North America really was. So I took a Greyhound Bus.
約半年住んだバンクーバーを離れてトロントへ行く事にした。北米大陸を横断するのは初めてで、その広さを体感するのを楽しみにしていた。そのためグレーハンドバスで移動する事にしたのだ。

バスの旅
The people who take the bus rather than the airplane tend to be a bit different from the types that you will see at airports. For one thing, it is the cheapest public transportation to go long distances. So inevitably you will encounter more budget-wary people on busses. That is just a fact.
飛行機ではなく、バスで旅行する人達は、空港で見かけるタイプとは少し違う傾向にある。一つの理由は長距離を移動する手段ではバスが最もお金がかからないからだ。と言うわけで実際、バスの乗客にはエコノミーな乗客が多いのは事実だ。

The bus depot was a bit sketchy and I was a little nervous. It was different from bus travels in Japan for sure. There were almost homeless-looking people among the travelers.
バス乗り場は少し危なそうな場所にあったので僕は少し緊張した。日本のバス旅行とは全く違った印象だった。中にはホームレスに近いような人も中には居た。
飯食わぬ男
It was a three-day trip to Tronto, stopping at many small towns. I had encountered many people coming and going throughout the long trip. There was this guy who was sitting next to me for a while. When the bus stopped at the various points for breaks, I noticed that he ate nothing for a long time. Later I came to find out that he didn’t have money. So I “loaned” him some money because I just couldn’t stand a fellow human starving next to me.
多くの小さな町に停まってトロントまで行くには３日かかった。長い道中、乗ってきたり降りて行ったりする人たちをたくさん見た。そんな中で、ずいぶん長い間ぼくの隣に座っていた男がいた。時折休憩のために停まる際にずっと食事を食べない事に気づいた。その後彼は一文無しであることが判明。僕の隣で人が空腹に苦しんでいるのは耐えられないので、彼にお金を「貸した」。
He was very appreciative and promised me to send me money when he could, taking down my contact information. I never heard from him as I had thought.
彼はすいぶんありがたがって、金を返せるようになり次第送る、と僕の連絡先まで聞いていた。予想通り、後日彼からの連絡は無かった。
