About 30 years ago, I was living in Vancouver with a working holiday visa. The first days of my first experience living abroad were exciting.
30年ほど前にカナダのバンクーバーでワーキングホリデーヴィサを取って生活していた。初めての外国での暮らしの最初の日々はとても刺激的だった。
回顧録シリーズ、前回からの続きです。
休日の過ごし方
On the day off, I used to take buses to downtown. Just looking around the shops, museums and other tourist attractions was so much fun. And I would go to a movie theater where I could watch slightly old movies inexpensively. I couldn’t understand the story well back then but it was a good practice of listing to English.
When I happen to watch these movies that had watched in that theater, now I can understand perfectly. It is interesting to understand them finally after so many years later.
休日にはバスに乗ってダウンタウン出かけた。店や美術館、博物館、その他の観光スポットを見て回るだけですごく楽しかった。最新では無い映画を安く見れる映画館にも良く行った。その頃は話の筋も理解できなかったけれども英語を聞く良い勉強になった。
その頃そこで見た映画をたまたま見たりすると、今は完全に理解できる。何年もたった後にやっと理解できたりすると不思議な気分だ。
知り合った友人
Near the house I was living, there was a big house that had a few exchange students renting rooms. A couple of Japanese girls and a Swiss woman. Especially Karen from Switzerland, and I became great friends. A still vivid memory is that we used to climb a cherry tree in the night eating cherries in moonlight. I liked listening to her singing a German pop song “99 Luftballons”, a big hit song back then. I wonder how she is doing now.
僕が住んでいた家の近くには大きな家があって、数人の交換留学生が間借りしていた。２人の日本人の女の子と、スイス人のカレンがいた。カレンとは特に仲が良くなった。月夜にサクラの木に登ってサクランボウを食べたことは鮮明に思い出す。その頃ヒットしていたドイツ語の歌、「99 Luftballons」を彼女が歌うのを聞くのが好きだった。
タバコを盗む家主
My landlady loved blues music. She sometimes took me to see a band in some bars. She was living by herself, so she really liked to have my company to go dancing with. She was a strange woman, but we got along well. So I didn’t mind that she would sneak into my basement and stole my cigarettes from time to time.
僕の家主の女性はブルースが好きで、時にはバーにライブミュージックを聞きに連れて行ってくれた。一人で生活していた彼女は僕と一緒にダンスに出かけることが好きだったのだ。少し変わった人であったけれど、僕らは仲が良かったので、彼女がたまに僕のベースメントに忍び込みタバコを盗んでいくのも気にならなかった。
