アメリカ人の全てがクレイジーだとは思わないで!

I am an American. And I am shocked at how crazy this country is becoming every day.

僕はアメリカ人だ。そして毎日この国がどんどん狂って行くのにショックを受けている。

If I can’t believe what’s happening right here in this country, I can only imagine what people from other countries are thinking.

この国に住んでいる僕にとっても今起こっていることが信じられないのならば、諸外国の人たちがどのように思っているのかは想像がつく。

信じがたい現実

Every time I speak with my friends, we talk about the weird political situation of the country in a desperate way.

僕が友人たちを話をすると決まって絶望的な感じで話す話題はこの国の異常な政治状況だ。

We can’t believe what’s happening, so we are compelled to make sure others are feeling the same way. Especially since Trump came into the picture.

起こっていることがあまりにも信じられないので他の人が同じように感じているのを確認したくなるのだ。トランプの登場以来は特にそうだ。

身の回りの人たち

I am a Liberal. I am registered as Democrats. I am a professional artist. Naturally almost all friends of mine are concerned about the current crazy situation in our country.

僕はリベラルで民主党として登録している。そしてアーティストとして仕事をする。必然的にほぼ全ての僕の知人は現在の状況に懸念を抱いている。

田舎と都会

But we live in a rural community where the political views tend to be more conservative, on the right. So I do have some interactions with the other point of view.

しかし僕らは田舎のコミュニティーに住んでいる。田舎は保守的で政治的にも右寄りな場合が多い。そのため意見の違う人と接触する機会もある。

For example, two out of four of my local rural rock band are Republicans.

例えば僕の田舎の地元のバンドのメンバー４人のうち２人は共和党支持者だ。

The current political divide is more urban vs rural than state to state.

現在の政治的な二極化は、州によって違うと言うよりは、都会か田舎かで分かれるのだ。

意見の違いを超えている

It is normal to have a spectrum of two political views—conservatives and liberal. The balance between the views will work for everyone.

保守と革新という対峙する２つの政治的意見とその間の様々な意見があるのは普通のことだ。そのバランスが取れる政策は多勢にとって都合が良い。

But recently it is not just the difference of opinions. What would you do when the other opinions are not fact-based? You can’t “compromise” with falsehoods, can you?

しかし最近の状況は単なる意見の違いではない。他方の意見が事実に基づいていない場合はどうする？間違った事実と「妥協」することは出来ないのではないか？

マスクが政治的になる法外さ

The mask debate is the perfect example. Scientific truth says wearing masks is effective to prevent the spread of the virus.

マスクに関する議論は良い例だ。マスクを着用することはウイルスの拡散を防ぐことを助けるというのは科学的な事実だ。

But there are many people who express their political views by not wearing a mask!

しかし、多くの人がマスクを着用しないことで彼らの政治的意見を誇示するのだ！

Global warming denial is another thing.

地球温暖化を認めないのも同じことである。

まとめ

I want to tell everybody outside of this country that more than half of Americans think this is not normal. We, too, are amazed at what’s going on in this country.

アメリカ人の半数以上の人は今の状況を普通とは思っていないと言う事を世界の人々に分かってもらいたい。僕ら自身もこの国で起こっている事に驚愕しているのだ。

We just can’t wait till the presidential election in November.

そして、みんな11月の大統領選挙を待ちわびている。
