抗議デモに揺れるポートランドの街、日中はどんな感じ？

I had some errands and went to Portland downtown.

ちょっとした用事があり、ポートランドのダウンタウンへ行ってきた。

The news from Portland, of protests, illegal arrests, and deadly shooting…, have been very disturbing lately. So I was curious what it is like during a day.

デモや、非合法な逮捕、銃撃事件など、ポートランドの最近のニュースは穏やかではでない。そんなわけで、日中の街はどんな感じなのか、興味があった。

Not so many people or cars

I didn’t see many people as usual. This is mainly due to the pandemic but Portland is in Phase 2, meaning restaurants, hair salons, sports gyms are open.

いつのも人出は無い。主にパンデミックの影響だが、ポートランドは現在、再開の第2段階にあり、レストランや、ヘアーサロン、スポーツジムなどの営業は許可されいている。

But many store fronts were boarded up as a precaution for possible riots.

しかし、万が一の暴動に備え、多く店の表はベニヤ板が貼り付けられている。

I didn’t encounter any traffic and the street parking spots are unusually empty.

車の渋滞も無かったし、路上駐車の場所も通常とは違い、かなり空いていた。

Many homeless people

Portland has been having homeless problems for some time.

結構前からポートランドはホームレスの問題を抱えている。

And the problem is not just about the fact many peoples lost their homes, but it is also about drug-addiction problems and about mental illness problems on the street as well.

そして、これは、住む家が単に無いという問題だけではなく、ドラッグ中毒の問題でもあり、また精神病の問題でもあるのだ。

Maybe because there weren’t much usual commercial activities, the presence of homeless people was felt prominently.

いつものような商業活動があまり無かったせいか、ホームレスの存在が際立って感じられた。

Different world we now live in

Pandemic and political unrest had changed the Portland downtown.

パンデミックと政治的対立のためにポートランドはすっかり変わってしまった。

Last time I spent some time in the downtown was just a year ago when I was showing my artwork at an outdoor art show.

最後にダウンタウンで時を過ごしたのはちょうど一年前で、アート作品を屋外アートショーで展示した時の事だ。

Wow, what a transformation we have gone through!

なんたる変わり様だ！

The parallel universe, that’s what I was thinking. Like, “1Q84”.

「パラレルワールド」。そんな事を考えていた。「1Q84」の様に。
