アメリカのメール投票：オレゴンの投票用紙をお見せしよう

Finally, Oregon gets to vote on primary for the coming presidential election.

There are lots of talks about “voting by mail” these days especially because of the pandemic.

I have my ballot in my hand. I will show how it works.

やっとオレゴンも大統領選挙の候補者を選ぶ投票の時がきた。

このパンデミックのおかげで特に最近メールによる投票についての議論が多い。

僕のところにも投票用紙が来たのでお見せしよう。

オレゴンの場合

Oregon has been using voting by mail system for a long time.

Seeing people having a hard time voting in other state with a limited number of voting places and long lines always makes me wonder why they don’t adopt voting by mail.

オレゴンではメール投票をずいぶん長い間行ってきている。

他の州で人々が少ない投票所で長い列で待たされ、大変な思いをしているの見るたびに、なぜメール投票を行わないのかいつも不思議に思う。

メール投票に反対する理由

Republicans tend to oppose voting by mail.

They say it invites voting frauds without concrete evidences. But the true reason is that the more people vote, the less republicans will be elected.

So they try to make voting difficult especially for minorities and low income people.

共和党の支持者(リパブリカン）はメール投票に反対する傾向にある。

明白な証拠も無いのに、メール投票は選挙不正を招くという。しかし本当の理由は、選挙の投票数が多くなればなるほど共和党の立候補者が選ばれないからだ。

そのため、共和党は特にマイノリティや低所得者層が投票しにくい環境を作ろうとする。

For voting by mail, you will receive this pamphlet along with the ballot.

It lists the candidates for the positions and their statements. Also lists measures in your local government.

This time, we have primary presidential election, some federal and state congresses candidates and one measure for our county.

メール投票に当たっては、投票用紙と共にパンフレットが送られてくる。

パンフレットは役職に対する立候補者をリストしてそれぞれのメッセージが載せられている。また、地方自治体の法案の内容なども記載される。

今回は大統領候補のプライマリと連邦そして州の議会の議員選挙、そして郡の法案１件があった。

まとめ

Voting by mail is the way to go: I can read the voter’s pamphlet throughly at home and fill the ballot and mail it out. Not going out in the public and wait in a line during the pandemic.

メール投票が一番いい。家でゆっくり投票用のパンフレットを読んで投票用に記入できる。そしてそれをメールに出すだけだ。ウイルスの蔓延する中わざわざ外出して長い列で待たなくても良い。
