僕らの友人の夫婦が、一時的に住む場所が必要となった。このところ、アメリカ西海岸の住宅事情はクレイジーで、適当な賃貸物件が見つからないらしい。
Our friends, a couple, needed a place to live temporarily. The housing situation has been crazy along West Coast recently, and they couldn’t find a feasible rental.
そんな訳で、友人として出来る事、彼らと彼らの犬をしばらく招待することにしたのだ。
So, as good friends would do, we offered our place for the couple and their dog.
人の目はいい事?
通常は人が来る機会があると家を掃除する。昨年は訪問者が居なかった。よって僕らの家はかなり散らかっていたのだ。
Usually, having visitors makes us clean our house. Last year, we didn’t have any visitors, so our house was a special mess!
友人が同居すると決まると、彼らの目を通して自分の家を観察する。詳細例を挙げはしないが、そうして見ると、人様には見せられない箇所が多数あり、対処の必要がある。
Once we decided to have our friends live with us, we started to look around the house through their eyes. I wouldn’t go into the details, but there were numerous shameful parts in the house which needed to be addressed.
改装 & 清掃
単に普通の掃除だけでは無く、修繕したり、改装する必要があるものもある。
Not only the regular cleaning, but there are many places that we need to fix and renovate if necessary.
客用のトイレの洗面台を長年、止む無くアート・クラフトのために使用していたが、今回、ガレージに専用の流しを新らしく設置した。そして客用の新しい洗面台を自作し、新しいトイレを設置した。そしてアンティークのドアをレストアして、安っぽいドアと交換した。
I constructed a new utility sink in the garage for our art and craft needs, so that we don’t have to use the quest bathroom anymore. I created a vanity for our guest bathroom. I installed a new toilet. I restored an antique door to replace the cheap door.
僕のようにダラけた男には締め切りがあるのはとても効果的だ。友人がやってくる前に何とか工事を終了して掃除も済ませた。時間制限がなければ２倍の時間がかかったろう。
Nothing better than a deadline for a lazy man like me. I managed to finish the projects and cleaning before their arrival. I would have taken twice as long if there wasn’t a timeframe.
住宅事情
その友人たちはカルフォルニア州のモンテレー郡に住んでいたのだが、大家がリースの契約の更新をしないことにしたらしい。その辺は昨年の山火事とパンデミックの影響で賃貸物件は少なく、家賃はとても高い。
Our friends had been living in Monterey county, California, and their landlord decided not to renew the lease. The area was hard hit by wild fires last year, and along with the effect of the pandemic, the rent properties are scarce and very expensive.
幸いなことに、僕らは家を所有している。家は家族用に設計されたものだが、僕らには子供がいない。だから友人が滞在する広さは十分にある。
Luckily, we own our house. The house is designed for a family, but we don’t have children. So we have a plenty of room to host our friends.
人と住む
妻と僕は共に、どちらかというと内向的だ。当然、最初は人が常に周りに居るのは疲れた。しかし人間は環境に慣れるのが得意で、２週間もすると、まあ慣れるものである。
My wife and I are rather introverts. Naturally, it was challenging at first to have other people around all the time. But humans are remarkable in our abilities of adaptation. After two weeks, I am sort of adjusted to the situation.
それに、長い人類の歴史で人は常に集団で住んでいた。結局は人間は社会的な生き物なのだ。特にパンデミックのために1年間ロックダウンの状態が続いたこともあり、僕は人間同士の関わりの良い影響について考えるのだ。
Besides, in the long history of humankind, we always have lived with groups. After all, we are social animals. And especially after a year of pandemic lockdown due to the pandemic, I think about the benefit of social interactions.
なにはともあれ、友人を助けられることが出来たのが幸運であった。
“A friend in need is a friend indeed.” (助けが必要な時の友人は本当の友人だ）
まとめ
しかし人の目があると、ゲップや、おなら、だけで無く、独り言、奇声（？）など、生活態度、習慣を改めて見直す機会が多い。しかも山の中での生活は、通常は人目が少ないだけに余計に注意が必要なのかもしれない。
When other people are around, we reconsider many things like our habits and way of doing things. Not just burping and farting, but mumbling to yourself or emitting strange noise for no reason, etc. Especially in the country where few people are around, we need to watch it.
